Movies can be inspirations for us photographers with their beautiful lighting and focus points that draw you into an image. Below are some examples of photos that give you that cinematic feel and we’ll share with a you a couple of tips on how to achieve this.
First, shoot with a really good lens. My choice of lens would be my trusty 180mm f/2.8 lens to compress the background, but a “Nifty Fifty” 50mm f/1.8 would work well also.
Make sure your focus is sharp on your subject and think about using the rule of thirds to create an off center subject. Its also better to not have them look at the camera, very few actors look directly into the lens but some of the examples below work well despite this.
Be aware of the distance between subject and background. A good distance behind the subject before distracting elements start showing up. Use color to separate the main subject from the background.
Then you’ll want to crop your image in a 16×9 format. See the link below for a Scott Kelby tutorial.
In post, maybe add a greenish or bluish tone to your images.
You can also add bars like many of these shots have to help give it the cinematic feel.
Have some fun and play with your images to see what you can create.
Scott Kelby has a nice tutorial on how to create this effect in Photoshop and Lightroom.
